The Lady’s Revenge is a Film Noir inspired short that I shot as an experimental exercise to improve my directing and photography skills.
I’m happy with the end result of this project. I had less than three days to shoot and edit it so it was a case of get it done quickly and learn what I can from it, which I did. Shooting a dialogue-free short and in black and white meant there was a huge emphasis on the composition of the shot and the actors selling their characters through body language. I felt this would apply pressure to me as the director as the viewers’ attention would be far more directly focused on these aspects.
I was very happy with the actors performances, we got on well and I feel that their performances justified my decision to go dialogue-free.
If I could shoot the whole thing again I would put a lot more emphasis on shadow play. I wanted to get a tonne of cardboard to create some really cool shapes to plaster the walls with but I didn’t have the time in the end. I was happy with the characters shadows both for the greeting and the finale.
The other aspect I was pleased with was the music- I feel it was selected appropriately and added huge amounts to the film, perfectly fitting the tone it was intended to convey. This took a while too as I had to smash tracks together and jiggle everything about quite significantly to get the various timings to correlate to the characters actions.
